Faith & Approval

"Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval." (Hebrews 11:2)

The unknown author of the letter to the Hebrews had just finished defining faith. He had suggested that it was the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. Now he turns and in seeking to encourage us "to live by faith," lays down a principle that he will go onto give real life of examples of throughout chapter 11, culminating in his identifying Jesus as the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. So what is the principle?

The principle is as follows: "it was because of their faith that these ancestors are remembered and commended." That is what makes them great, this and nothing more. That being the case; this principle is to be an encouragement to me and you to live by faith. Firstly of course; faith in the saving sufficiency of Jesus and then; faith and dependence upon God that is identified by action; that can only be understand in the context of absolute dependence upon God's ongoing provision.

So like those of ancient times, the writer is calling me and you to live by faith. Faith in God, dependence and trust in him, that leads to radical action. May the Spirit of God empower faith in our midst for the glory of Jesus,' name.
