Spiritual Warfare - Part One

E-mail Print
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Eph. 6:12)

Paul began this section in Ephesians by calling Christians to be strong in the Lord and the strength of his might. He then went on to encourage them to put on their armour and stand firm against the Devil and his schemes, then he moves onto explain why this is necessary. So why is it necessary? His answer to this question is that we ought to put on the armour of the Lord because the Christian life is a struggle and it is a struggle that is not only with the material and readily observable world around us, but a struggle against the powers of darkness. The Bible, you see, presents a worldview which includes demonic powers hostile to the cause of Christ in the world. Of course "our worldview" often is very shaped by our culture and our education, which sees truth as defined by the material and scientific and yet scripture says we exist in a world where spiritual conflict is a reality. Of course the war is won in Christ ultimately, but nevertheless the battle rages on. So let us stand firm. Stand tall in the salvation that Christ has bought us.
