From little things, Big things grow

"Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches."

(Luke 13:18-19)

The kingdom of God is the reign and rule of God, through Jesus his King in our world. What is that kingdom like? Well Jesus gives a variety of snapshots of his kingdom through parables that give us insights into the nature of the kingdom. In this parable Jesus tells us that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed; which apparently is amongst the most tiny of seeds, that is planted. Once planted of course it grows and becomes a great tree. So what is this parable about? That is; what does this say about the kingdom of God. Perhaps it says that things in the kingdom often start small but from there they expand and grow to become great. For example Jesus born an infant in Bethlehem turns out to be the messiah who takes away the sins of the world. A group of misfit fisherman and tax collectors turn out to be the means by which God takes his message to the world.

I don't know what small things God is doing in your life, but I say; be encouraged, take heart because those small things, when planted and watered grow into big things in God's hands. So do not despise the day of small things, instead look toward their growth.
