I was giving a talk a few weeks ago in chapel in the school on Joshua chapter one and the call upon Joshua to be strong and courageous. Within the context of that talk I spoke a little about rugby league (surprising I know) and made a few bold claims about Manly's credentials and the lack their of, of their opponents that weekend. In short, I had been proud and overconfident about a game that was coming up. Sadly Manly subsequently were outplayed and put to shame and as I walked through the playground afterward I too was put to shame- I was disgraced by my own arrogance. That is what pride can do. That is why Solomon wrote this Proverb: disgrace follows pride but humility is wisdom.
Pride can leave us with no where to go. It can back us into a corner and cause us to disregard and disrespect others. Humility however is measured. It knows its place and looks to think of others. Christ embraced a life of humility. That of course did not mean that he was unsure of himself, and uncertain. No; he was bold, intentional and had a good sense of self. But in all of that he embraced humility as a way of life. He earnestly sought to lift others up and honor them- he did so through the incarnation & he did so in his willing submission to the father; even in matters as colossal as embracing the cross. Embrace humility- in that there is wisdom.
