CHURCH NEWS - Sunday, 31 July 2011 |
Listen & ObeyDo not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:22-15) Today our message is on “listening to God.” Surely this is an important part of Christian life, that if we are going to thrive, needs to become part of our lives. But listening alone is not what we are shooting for. We are to both listen & put into practice what is revealed to us. It is not as though God is our equal, our peer and our friend- who can listen to and reply well; whatever i hear you but frankly I don’t like what I hear. No he is God- and because that is who he is- when he speaks we like Samuel before us are to simply say; “speak Lord your servant is listening.” But of course more than that, we then are to listen and to apply the truths revealed to us. There is something self deceptive about listening to the word and then thinking to ourselves- well I have heard God. He has spoken to me and now I am done, I will go away now having done my bit- having heard from God. No James that most practical theologian says listen and do what is said. In listening and obeying you see there is life and even further revelation. But obedience brings with it its own lessons and is a powerful way of affirming your love and trust in God- God wants us to listen and obey and he will in turn bless.
